Purchased by the Department of Natural Resources in the late 1970s, Havenwoods State Forest has been restored to become 237 acres of beauty in central Milwaukee. Past uses of this former residential land include a correctional facility, a city landfill and missile test site for the US Army. Great care was taken in restoring this land to its natural state with the planting of tens of thousands of trees, wildflower placement, pond building and miles of nature trails for hiking. The Havenwoods State Forest neighbors the US Army Reserve Center, adjacent to McGovern Park.
